Aquaponic Vertical Garden
The United States produces about 10% of the farmed fish domestically produced, compared to China which produces about 62%. U.S. fruit and vegetable exports totaled more than $9 billion in 2021, U.S. imports of fruits and vegetables exceeded $18 billion, resulting in a gap between imports and exports of $11.2 billion.
Half of the world’s population lives in cities, therefore it is paramount that production of food be established where the people are rather than trucking food from distant locations.
Most of the food that we purchased is delivered from hundreds or even thousand miles away. Imagine how much we could cut the use of fossil fuels if we switch to food produced in our cities. An aquaponics system is a food growing system that could have zero impact on our environment, especially if the pumps and heaters are powered through renewable energy sources. Earth to Table’s vertical garden will use an anaerobic digester combined with a heat and power unit to convert organic waste into biogas that will be used to power the building. This will create a netzero energy system making it selfsustaining. Perhaps the single most important aspect of an aquaponic system is that it can be started anywhere. So then, instead of clearing jungles and forests we can focus on our urban centers and begin to think of old factory and warehouse buildings as the farms of our future.
